Crowdsourcing ID through internet forums

April30

While I’m not quite sold, an article in Electronics Design, Strategy, News called “How to Get Near-Instant Market Research for your Next Product Design” claims the crowdsourcing of industrial design is becoming more and more feasible. The article’s case in point is David L. Jones’ calculator watch, which is currently going from sketch into something more refined, apparently based on the feedback of calculator watch geeks populating a forum at the online Museum of HP Calculators. (You can track the progress of this particular project here.)

The calculator is a fairly straightforward, rectilinear device with buttons on a grid. I’d be curious to see this “crowdsourced ID” applied on say, a cooking utensil in a forum full of chefs or similar.

Crowdsourcing WarioWare via Ore

April30

Outside of the bit Generations (or, as it’s now known, Art Style) series, the WarioWare franchise and its chaotic strings of one to two-second-long microgames remains one of Nintendo’s boldest experiments after decades of safer and more traditionalist design.

Though each subsequent iteration (from motion-sensitive twisting, to DS original touching, to Wii-mote smooth-moving) has seen the refreshingly belligerent streak of the Game Boy Advance original necessarily tamed as it asked for more motor skill precision, the latest volume, now fully detailed for the first time in Japan, has laid the series’ fate in your hands.

While still not officially announced for the U.S. (though a shoe-in to appear), the latest DS version, Made in Ore (roughly, Made In Me), has taken the series for a decidedly crowdsourced turn and will let players fully design, share and remix their own microgames — as well as comics and music.

Crowdsourcing to Save Chuck

April29

savechuck_2

Shortly after the Academy Awards this year, I pulled together some thoughts on the idea of the Twitter community expanding the size of a couch. Well, I’m actually really kind of excited to watch now that the community is focusing its energy on a pop culture cause: saving a bubble show from potential cancellation.

For those who aren’t familiar with NBC’s Chuck, it’s kind of a geek’s wildest dream type show. Guy (Zachary Levi’s Chuck - no relation) gets the entire secrets of the CIA downloaded into his head and has to balance his day job as a Nerd Herder (a TV-fied version of Best Buy’s Geek Squad) with being a super agent. Doesn’t hurt that his “handlers” include the smokin’ Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) and witty, business-as-usual, tough guy John Casey (Adam Baldwin).

No wonder Twitterers and Bloggers love the show: it’s the perfect type of show for the Geekdom. Scattered throughout the series are references to Tron, cheap shots at the Zune, and an episode this season in which Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” was proven to be the music of the universe as Chuck saves the world - again (check the recap of that episode below). It’s definitely perfect for the inside-the-series-of-tubes crowd.

Improving Firefox via Crowdsourcing

April28

The latest release of Firefox offered itself for installation today, with this announcement of its new features:

ffox

I’ve read an article a while ago telling firefox stability problems with Mac version of Firefox which crashed constantly, to be specific on a MacMini under OS X 10.5.6 . At first i thought I’m the only experiencing this problem. I’m using windows by the way and what I’ve observed on the previous version is that even you’re not browsing or even a single tab was open it would crash always. But I don’t really know that the problem is. Maybe a “major stability issue” not entirely nailed down in this latest release? I don’t know yet. It’s the first serious stability problem I’ve had in years of using Firefox. Not looking for reports from far and wide about where it’s working and not. Just offering this report, as part of the crowdsourcing process, I think the team should focus with this part so that users would not encounter the same problem on the future.

Crowdsourcing - Twindexx

April27

Twindexx claims itself to be the crowding-source application to find the best
people
on Twitter.

You can find people based on recommendations of others and shared interests. You can find the most relevant
people
to connect with, and see who they connect with and recommend, and who they connect with and recommend.

Some features of Twindexx:

  • Discover like-minded users to connect with
  • Add keywords to help others to find you
  • Endorse your favorite
    people
    and brands
  • Reduce the “noise” and connect with the best of twitter

Twindexx will let the crowd know who are the most active and best Twitterers and start  following them on the spot. The whole system is based on endorsements, the crowd recommends people that they deem as the best of Twitter, and let the rest of the community learn about them.

This service has a number of distinct advantages, the most obvious being that through a tool like this one anybody can find relevant people to connect with either for business or leisure purposes, and stay clear of those who do nothing but waste time.

Furthermore, such a solution means that the community can rate brands through Twitter. Brands can then be rewarded or panned for their efforts (or lack of).

Summing up by Killerstartups, the site is an effective filter that will let both new and old users have a fulfilling Twitter experience since it will eradicate the clutter and let them focus on what truly matters. All in all, a truly Twitter-powered community that can have a significant impact on the web as we know it.

Crowdsourcing the Counter-Piracy Problem in Somalia

April27

With the attack on the Maersk Alabama, a U.S.-operated cargo vessel, our attention once again turns to pirates operating in and around Somalia. With Somali pirates demonstrating an amazing ability to collaborate, we should be concerned about the lack of effective US and international cooperation. It’s not as if we haven’t put resources out there; NATO, the European Union, and the United States have all placed an incredible amount of assets in the region. But, we have failed when it comes to effectively collaborating across the broader maritime community and delivering real solutions.

Following the recent attack we’ve heard from dozens of analysts, bloggers and pundits who each respond with different ideas on how to address the issue. With recommendations including aggressive action against the pirates, exclusion zones and “sons of Iraq” models, a return to convoys, and more, we haven’t seen much discussion around the “information” problem. And yet, information could be a key enabler of our counter-piracy strategy. While criminals and pirates have effectively used a mix of low-tech and high-tech solutions to collaborate and target shipping, the maritime and national security communities have largely ignored their information strengths. Given the amount of data available and the large community of interest, we should launch a program to expose our information and develop a crowdsourced counter-piracy campaign.

Crowdsourcing missions for MMOGs

April26

Really interesting post at Kotaku about City of Heroes experience with crowdsourcing story arcs.

In a letter to the community posted on the official City of Heroes website, Matt “Positron” Miller revealed that within the first 24 hours of the new updates’ existence, players in both hero and villain factions had created more than 3800 story arcs, each consisting of five missions a piece - more content than the development team had created during the game’s entire existence.

Players have been busy trying out missions and critiquing them in the forums as well. Out of the more that 20,000 arcs now available in game, 2,860 of them have been rated 5-stars by players, with only 582 rated at 1-star. Popular themes include the 5th Column, featured in 794 arcs; the super-heroic Statesman, starring in 134; and time travel, which is the subject of 112 arcs.

As an indication of volume, this is more story arcs that have been created by the game developers in five years!

One popular element was creating custom opponents notes the City of Heroes blog

70% of the arcs that are published use Custom Enemy groups. These are enemies created using our fantastic costume editor, coupled with a large sampling of the powersets that the game already uses. These unique enemies have proven to be extremely popular and sparked new life into the game. Players absolutely love fighting custom enemies for the simple fact that they no longer know what to expect. One of the biggest problems with MMOs is you eventually learn what all the critters you are fighting do, and the game can get pretty rote. Developers make new critters, but there can be months before you get new ones. Now players have the opportunity to be constantly making new enemies with new, interesting capabilities that can challenge and vex themselves and their friends, any time they want.:

I don’t play City Of Heroes, so I don’t know how directly applicable this idea is to web based social games. However, any of the social games currently available have very similar structures (e.g. the “wars” genre) which can get old over time. Perhaps this approach of crowdsourcing missions might add some interesting eldergame elements to these games.

- I’ve also read some articles like this on how they would improve a game. They think that using crowdsourcing model a game could become more excellent and more exciting with the help of the massive crowd like adding some features on a certain part of the game. Well i agree with this thing they are open for revisions and modifications which is really good. Because of course if you’re a real gamer you’re just not contented on what you’ve been playing because I’m sure you have some great insights on your mind that you want to suggest on how they could improve the gameplay of the game or its design.

Developing mobile technology through crowdsourcing

April25

Hi guys a new crowdsourcing based website is now been started and they need some mobile developers who can participate in making an innovation with mobile technology. Here’s a small recap of the site announcement.

“The Betavine Academy will be a place where non-mobile developers can come to start their development careers with mobile technology”. The website is planning to introduce the Betavine Academy in 4 phases.
